How to Safely Store Firearms

How to safely store firearms is very important. There are several key responsibilities that individuals need to understand when purchasing a firearm. They must learn how to use the firearm correctly, how to properly maintain it, and how to properly store it.  This article will focus on the best ways to store your firearm:

  • Gun Safe.  A high-quality gun safe can protect your firearm from a house fire, and make it very difficult for anyone else to access it.
  • The safe should have a fire rating of at least one hour, this suggests that the safe can endure sixty minutes worth of flames at approximately twelve-hundred degrees Fahrenheit before the contents inside are damaged.
  • The gun safe’s door is typically the primary point of attack and for that reason should have a thickness between 10-gauge to 6-gauge. The thickness and quality of the steel determines its strength.  The higher the gauge number, the thinner the steel; the lower the gauge number, the thicker the steel.
  • The safe should be large enough to store all of your existing and potential firearms and valuables.
  • Gun Cabinet. A steel gun cabinet can offer some level of defense against unauthorized access, but is less effective against house fires and intruders. The gun cabinet’s steel is much thinner, and the locking mechanism is less durable. This and more can be learn during our training class.
  • Trigger-Lock.  Most new guns are equipped with trigger locks provided by the gun manufacturer. The trigger lock can’t protect your weapon from a house fire, but it can prevent the firearm from being fired or taken by an unauthorized person. The trigger lock works by covering the trigger and trigger guard of the firearm with a locking mechanism that prevents the trigger from being fired. They are normally sold with cables that can be wrapped around something to prevent an intruder from grabbing the firearm and running off with it.
  • Gun Case.  Gun cases are commonly used to avoid scuffing or damaging the firearms while transporting them.  They provide you with peace of mind more than adequate protection.  Gun cases are not as secure as a gun safe, but you can still prevent your firearm from  being accessed by  fully closing the gun case and placing an ordinary padlock in the zipper tabs to prevent unauthorized access.
Storing your weapons properly is important for keeping them safeguarded against unauthorized access. It is one of the major responsibilities that you take on as a gun owner, and it is not one that you can afford to ignore.
