Understanding Ammunition: A Guide to Common Bullet Types and Their Uses
When choosing ammunition, understanding the differences between common bullet designs is an important part of responsible firearm ownership. Ammunition designed for target practice, competition, training, hunting, or personal defense can differ significantly in construction and intended performance.

Why Ammunition Type Matters
A cartridge consists of several components, including the case, primer, propellant and projectile. While caliber is important, two cartridges of the same caliber can use very different projectile designs.
Bullet construction can affect characteristics such as feeding reliability, accuracy, recoil characteristics, penetration and terminal performance. The correct ammunition therefore depends on the firearm and its intended application.
Always use ammunition of the correct caliber or cartridge designation specified by the firearm manufacturer. When in doubt, consult the firearm owner’s manual or a qualified firearms instructor.
Full Metal Jacket (FMJ)
Full Metal Jacket, commonly abbreviated FMJ, is one of the most recognizable ammunition types.
An FMJ projectile generally has a lead core covered substantially by a harder metal jacket. Because FMJ ammunition is widely available and typically economical, it is commonly used for:
- Firearms training and practice
- Target shooting
- Qualification courses
- High-volume range sessions
FMJ ammunition generally does not expand like ammunition specifically engineered for controlled expansion. Shooters should therefore understand their target, backstop and what lies beyond it.
For many students attending a Las Vegas CCW class or firearms training course, FMJ ammunition is commonly encountered during range practice and qualification.
Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP)
Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) ammunition features a cavity in the nose of the projectile and an outer jacket.
Many JHP designs are engineered to expand when they encounter appropriate resistance. Depending on the particular cartridge, firearm, barrel length and ammunition design, expansion can increase projectile diameter while limiting penetration compared with some non-expanding designs.
JHP ammunition is commonly marketed for personal protection and law-enforcement applications.
However, not every firearm performs identically with every ammunition design. Reliability should always be a primary consideration when selecting ammunition for a particular handgun.
Hollow Point (HP)
The term Hollow Point (HP) broadly describes a projectile containing a hollow cavity in its nose.
Hollow-point projectiles come in numerous configurations. Some are jacketed, while others may be constructed differently depending on their intended application.
The important point is that “hollow point” does not describe one universal level of performance. Projectile construction, velocity and firearm characteristics can all influence performance.
Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP)
A Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP) combines exposed lead with a partial metal jacket.
This construction has historically been used in ammunition intended to balance penetration and expansion characteristics. As with other defensive ammunition, actual performance varies by manufacturer, projectile design, velocity and firearm.
Rather than choosing ammunition solely because of its appearance, shooters should consider the manufacturer’s intended application and whether that particular ammunition functions reliably in their firearm.
Wadcutter
A wadcutter has a relatively flat projectile profile and is strongly associated with precision target shooting, particularly in revolvers.
One major advantage is the distinctive hole it can produce in a paper target. The clean edges can make scoring easier during competition and precision shooting.
Wadcutters can also offer relatively mild shooting characteristics in certain loadings, making them useful for particular training applications.
Lead Round Nose (LRN)
Lead Round Nose (LRN) ammunition uses an unjacketed lead projectile with a rounded nose.
It is a traditional projectile design that has been used extensively for recreational shooting and training.
Because the projectile is exposed lead rather than completely jacketed, shooters should follow the range’s ammunition policies and consider manufacturer recommendations regarding ammunition selection and firearm maintenance.
Truncated Cone
A truncated-cone projectile has a profile resembling a cone with its tip removed, producing a relatively flat nose.
Truncated-cone designs are found in several ammunition categories and can be used for training, competition and other applications depending upon the specific cartridge.
The shape alone should not be used to determine ammunition performance. Construction, materials and manufacturer specifications are equally important.
Polymer-Tipped Ammunition
Polymer-tipped bullets incorporate a synthetic tip into the projectile.
These projectiles are available in several configurations and are particularly common in rifle ammunition. Depending upon the specific design, the polymer tip may contribute to aerodynamic performance, initiate expansion, protect the projectile’s nose, or serve another design purpose.
Not all polymer-tipped ammunition is intended for the same application, so always consult the ammunition manufacturer’s specifications.
Training Ammunition vs. Defensive Ammunition
One of the most common questions firearms instructors receive is whether shooters should use the same ammunition for practice that they intend to carry.
There are practical reasons why shooters frequently practice with less-expensive range ammunition while selecting different ammunition for defensive purposes. However, a firearm’s reliability and handling characteristics can vary between ammunition types.
A responsible firearm owner should understand how the ammunition selected for a particular firearm functions and follow manufacturer recommendations.
Price should not be the only consideration when selecting ammunition. Reliability, compatibility, intended purpose and safe performance are more important.
Never Assume Ammunition Is Compatible
Before loading ammunition into any firearm, verify the exact cartridge designation.
A cartridge that appears similar to another cartridge is not necessarily interchangeable.
Check the markings on the firearm and ammunition packaging and consult the firearm manufacturer’s documentation. Never attempt to fire ammunition unless you are certain it is appropriate for that firearm.
This simple verification is one of the most important ammunition-safety habits a shooter can develop.
Ammunition Storage and Safety
Ammunition should be kept in a cool, dry location and protected from excessive moisture, heat and contamination. Keeping ammunition in its original packaging also makes it easier to identify the manufacturer, cartridge designation and specific load.
Inspect ammunition before use. If a cartridge appears severely corroded, damaged, improperly seated or otherwise questionable, don’t use it.
And remember that safe ammunition handling is only one part of firearm safety. Always follow the fundamental firearm safety rules and the rules established by your range or firearms instructor.
